I envisaged that the painting should mirror the quasi-organic growth of a city: some parts subject to periods of stability or neglect, others, at the same moment or subsequently, subject to rapid growth and expansion; the centre shifting with time. Alongside this notion, the image of a medieval siege tower, an improvised, teetering structure lodged in my mind.
