The photographs of the construction of the Elan Dam, in Wales, at the end of the Nineteenth century, to supply water to the City of Birmingham, could be misinterpreted as images of trench warfare, siege, or as views of Edward I's castles. This reminder of earlier colonialism served to emphasize the colossal appetite of the city for energy and power.
